Summary

"Tam O'Shanter" by Robert Burns is a narrative poem where the reader follows a farmer's wild ride home after a night of drinking. Ignoring his wife’s warnings, the main character, Tam, encounters a coven of dancing witches in a haunted church, including the witch Nannie. Unable to resist shouting out, Tam finds himself chased by the angry supernatural beings. He narrowly escapes by crossing a stream, a barrier they cannot cross, but his trusty mare, Maggie, isn't so lucky. Burns uses lively language and vivid imagery to bring rural Scotland to life and mixes it with a message about the dangers of giving in to temptation and forgetting your responsibilities.

About the Author

Robert Burns, also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing is in a "light Scots dialect" of English, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.
