Great Possessions

"Great Possessions" by Wilfrid Ward, is a story set in the early 1900s that follows Lady Rose Bright as she deals with the death of her husband, Sir David, and the shocking details that come out in his will. The story looks at love, being true to others, and what society expects from women at the time. Lady Rose goes on an emotional journey as she finds out the complicated truths about her marriage and what was left to her. At the beginning of the novel, we see Sir David's memorial service, where Lady Rose is grieving and trying to understand the surprising parts of her husband's will. She finds out that most of his money is going to another woman, Madame Danterre, and she has to face the reality of her marriage and the possibility that her husband was unfaithful. Through talks with her mother, Lady Charlton, and the family lawyer, the beginning of the book shows Lady Rose struggling with her ideas about marriage and the hard truths about her husband's past, making readers think about love, giving up things for others, and how complicated relationships can be when society has certain expectations.
