Summary

"The Poems of Oliver Goldsmith" by Oliver Goldsmith is a compilation of verses from the 1700s reflecting on society and the natural world. The collection highlights Goldsmith's skill as a poet, examining themes of country living, people's behavior, and cultural observations. With a thoughtful and often sentimental feeling, the collection encourages readers to think about historical events and societal progress, exposing the poet's love for more straightforward, innocent periods. Opening the compilation, Goldsmith explores previous childhood memories in a country environment, applying vibrant descriptions to recall the youth that was spent in the charming town of Auburn. He illustrates a picture of a once-successful community, now surpassed by advancement and wealth, leading to feelings of sadness and despair. Through characters and sincere emotion, Goldsmith examines the happiness and suffering, building the setting for the subjects in the set of works.
