Summary

"The Golden Calf" by M. E. Braddon is a book focused on the challenges faced by young women in a society dominated by men during the 1800s, and how social class affects people's lives. Mainly, it's about Ida Palliser, a student who dreams of escaping her poor life. The book begins at Mauleverer Manor, a very strict boarding school. We see Ida having issues with Miss Pew, the school teacher, because Ida is poor, yet still wants to become an artist. Even though she's poor, Ida doesn't give up. She wants a better life, and to make friends too--especially Bessie Wendover, a rich student who sees how talented Ida is. Throughout the beginning of the novel, the reader can see Ida trying to climb the social ladder in order to succeed by finding a husband. She is proud and independent.
