Summary

"A Charming Fellow, Volume I" by Frances Eleanor Trollope is a story set in the late 1800s, that follows the life of Algernon Errington, an energetic young man, and his mother, Mrs. Errington, who dreams of a brilliant future for him. The story takes place among social expectations and family relationships. Mrs. Errington talks with Matthew Diamond, Algernon's tutor, showing that she thinks Dr. Bodkin doesn't see how great her son could be. She also thinks that a rich merchant's job offer is below Algernon. Mrs. Errington hopes that Algernon can impress Lord Seely, who is connected to her family, but this also creates problems. Through their conversations and home life, the book shows what the characters want and the social problems of the time.
