Summary

"Common Sense" by Thomas Paine is a powerful booklet from the 1700s that argues America should break free from England. Paine examines how governments and kings work, insisting that people have rights and that being ruled by a royal family is unfair. He starts by saying that government is a necessary problem because people aren't perfect. He then says that society is what people create together, but government is just there to keep people from being selfish and causing trouble. Paine slams the British government and the idea of inherited power, arguing that America's fight is important for everyone in the world, not just the colonies. He then looks at what's happening in America right now, saying that they need to declare independence immediately since making peace with Britain isn't just unrealistic, but wrong.

About the Author

Thomas Paine was an English-born American Founding Father, French Revolutionary, inventor, and political philosopher. He authored Common Sense (1776) and The American Crisis (1776–1783), two of the most influential pamphlets at the start of the American Revolution, and he helped to inspire the colonial era patriots in 1776 to declare independence from Great Britain. His ideas reflected Enlightenment-era ideals of human rights.
