Summary

"History of the Peninsular War, Volume 6" by Robert Southey is a historical record that digs into the continuing struggles of the Peninsular War. It probably talks about important battles, military plans, and the people who were part of those events. The story may mix together the experiences of leaders and regular soldiers to show the strategies used in the war and how it affected Spanish people. A guerrilla leader named Duran captures Soria from the French which begins more fighting and shows how tough the battles were. The French army kills members of the Junta of Burgos which leads to revenge attacks by the Spanish. The story then shows the clever actions of guerrilla groups, the many battles, and the ongoing violence of the war and also focuses on the strategic movements made by commanders. This beginning part helps readers understand the terrible times that soldiers and citizens went through during this war.

About the Author

Robert Southey was an English poet of the Romantic school, and Poet Laureate from 1813 until his death. Like the other Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Southey began as a radical but became steadily more conservative as he gained respect for Britain and its institutions. Other romantics such as Byron accused him of siding with the establishment for money and status. He is remembered especially for the poem "After Blenheim" and the original version of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears".
