Summary

"Cicero's Brutus, or History of Famous Orators; also His Orator, or Accomplished Speaker" by Marcus Tullius Cicero is a combined dialogue and study of persuasive speaking from the ancient world. The book kicks off with Cicero mourning the loss of a great speaker, Hortensius, and worrying about what his death means for Rome. Talking with his buddies Brutus and Atticus, Cicero decides to look back at the most famous speakers in history, figure out how they did it, and how public speaking has changed over time. The main idea is to closely examine influential figures in public speaking, connecting their skills with the politics and power struggles of the Roman world.
