Summary

"De Officiis" by Marcus Tullius Cicero is a philosophical conversation in book form from ancient Rome that considers right and wrong actions. It's like a long letter from a father to his son, who is off at school, about how to be a good person in both personal actions and dealings with the wider world. Drawing from older Greek ideas, the book figures out the rules and reasons for acting in ways that are honorable, useful, and in line with natural laws in different situations. It emphasizes that living morally isn't just a nice idea, it is core to a life well-lived and holding society together. It introduces the concept of moral duties that exist regardless of the circumstances.
