Summary

"Cyprus, as I Saw It in 1879" by Sir Samuel White Baker is an adventure across the island of Cyprus in the late 1800s. Through the eyes of an independent traveler and through personal observations, Baker describes the island's landscapes and people after the British arrived. The book starts with the author's arrival from Alexandria, where he sees the dry land of Cyprus. The story continues with tales of the life and ways of the people in Larnaca, showing both the good and the hard parts of life on the island. Baker shows how he planned for his journey with a special van made just to explore and talks about the strange traditions, how people traded, and what the economy of Cyprus was like after the government changed. This beginning sets up a journey that helps readers understand the history and special character of Cyprus at that time.
