Summary

"The Nether World" by George Gissing is a story that shows what life was like for poor people living in London in the late 1800s. The book is mostly about a young girl named Jane Snowdon, who is mistreated and represents how hard life was for many during this time. The story starts with an old man wandering the streets looking for something he has lost where he meets Jane, and this scene paints a sad picture of life in London's worst neighborhoods. Jane is treated badly by those around her, especially Clementina Peckover, who bullies her. Gissing tells a sad story about Jane's struggles, difficult relationships, and her desire for kindness in a world that is often brutal and uncaring. The first part of the book sets the stage for understanding the bigger social problems that the story will explore later on.
