Summary

"Memoir of the Proposed Territory of Arizona" by Sylvester Mowry is a comprehensive look at the Gadsden Purchase during the 1800s. The book explores the geographical features, abundant natural resources, and possibilities for growth in the area. Mowry shares his knowledge of the region’s valuable minerals and farming potential, along with the conflicts with Native American tribes. He supports the idea of Arizona becoming its own territory separate from New Mexico. Mowry goes over Arizona's resources, especially its silver and copper mines, in addition to its good farmland. He talks about past explorations and the building of missions, while also thinking about the problems faced by settlers because of Apache attacks and a lack of government help. The book aims to achieve political acknowledgment and motivates action from settlers, showing the region's economic possibilities and the pressing need for safety to help its development. Mowry strongly highlights both the opportunities and risks of living in the newly obtained territory.
