Summary

"Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland (2 of 6): England (05 of 12)" by Raphael Holinshed is a historical exploration of King Henry II's leadership in England, Scotland, and Ireland. Beginning with Henry's rise to power in 1154 after King Stephen's death, the narrative presents his coronation and his strategic actions to strengthen his kingdom, like removing foreign troops and reclaiming privately-owned castles. The saga introduces conflicts with nobles and family tensions that rise with his brother Geoffrey's rebellion, setting the stage for future clashes, especially with Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

About the Author

Raphael Holinshed was an English chronicler, who was most famous for his work on The Chronicles of England, Scotlande, and Irelande, commonly known as Holinshed's Chronicles. It was the "first complete printed history of England composed as a continuous narrative". The Holinshed Chronicles was a major influence on many Renaissance writers, such as Shakespeare, Spenser, Daniel and Marlowe.
