Summary

"BROAD-SWORD AND SINGLE-STICK" by Rowland George Allanson-Winn Headley is an instructional guide that highlights historical self-defense techniques, like those using a broadsword or quarterstaff. The book introduces the idea that English culture, while possibly thought of for commerce, is actually based on sportsmanship and physical activity. The author thinks about the story of self-defense and explains that fighting shifted into using weapons in combat. It explains that English boys appreciate sporting life and view self-defense and strength to be important pieces of being a male. The book then goes in-depth to discuss techniques using weapons while also discussing just how important sports are to English identity.
