The Village by the River

The Village by the River by H. Louisa Bedford is a story set in the changing landscape of Rudham following the death of its squire. The story begins with villagers, like the blacksmith Allison, gossiping about whose taking over after the large funeral of Mr. Lessing, opening dialogue for social change, ownership, and how the community connects. As Paul Lessing returns from distant lands to unexpectedly take on the role of squire, he encounters the dynamics of village life and all the responsibilities that come with it. Meanwhile, the developing connection between Paul and the local rector, Mr. Curzon, adds another layer to the changes happening in the village.
