Summary

"Peter Whiffle: His Life and Works" by Carl Van Vechten is a story about the extraordinary life of Peter Whiffle, told through the eyes of his close friend and literary executor. The story begins after Whiffle’s death, an event that barely caused a ripple in the world, which leads to the narrator reminiscing about their unique friendship built on inspiring conversations. Even though Whiffle never published his works, he greatly impacted the lives of the people around him because of his ideas. The story then moves to places and characters, following Whiffle's adventures in Paris where he meets people like Martha, the artist and the odd Peter who deals with artistic worries and dreams, and it sets up a bigger understanding of the relationship between art, life, and thinking about existence.
