Summary

"Deirdre" by James Stephens is a book set long ago in Ireland, inspired by really old stories, that tells of Deirdre, a girl who people say will bring sadness. It starts with King Conachúr thinking about his wife and feeling jealous, and then we hear about a prophecy that says a baby born that night will cause trouble. The king decides to name this baby Deirdre. The beginning of the story shows us the relationships between the characters and hints at the problems of love and power that are coming. Because of the prophecy, everyone is waiting to see what will happen to Deirdre and the people around her.
