Summary

"The Memoirs of a White Elephant" by Judith Gautier is a captivating story told from the point of view of Iravata, a unique white elephant living in Asia. He shares his extraordinary life as a royal elephant in Siam and India, including his special friendship with Princess Parvati. Iravata begins his memoirs by telling how he learned to write, a rare accomplishment. Living in the Palace of Golconda, he watches children learning and becomes curious about language. He starts secretly observing their lessons and eventually learns to write the alphabet on a schoolmaster's tablet. When Princess Parvati discovers Iravata's ability, it strengthens their bond and prepares them for facing adventures filled with happiness and difficulty together.
