Summary

"A Strange World: A Novel. Volume 1 (of 3)" by M. E. Braddon is a story set in the late 1800s, it tells about Justina Elgood, a young actress of seventeen, caught in a life she finds dull and unfulfilling while working at a theater with her father, Matthew Elgood, an older actor dedicated to their shared profession. The story begins in a beautiful meadow, where Justina shares her longing to escape her acting career and the boring routine of her life, yearning to be free in nature instead of at the theater, which she hates. Her father reminds her of the value of their acting profession, no matter how hard it is. Soon, they meet two young men named James and Maurice, and James quickly becomes interested in Justina that hints at a new friendship that could change how she sees love and her future. The start of the story shows the different social classes and desires that shape the lives of people in the world of theater.
