Summary

"First Person Paramount" by Ambrose Pratt is a tale about a gifted impersonator named Agar Hume, who gets a job as a personal servant for the rich and mysterious Sir William Dagmar. As Agar learns the ropes of his new job, he discovers strange secrets about Sir William and his high-society friends, who all seem to be connected through their sicknesses and a dark gambling ring. The story starts with Agar's tough childhood and his journey to London, where he's just trying to find work. Once he becomes Sir William's valet, he quickly notices his employer's strange habits, like how sick he is. As Agar gets used to his job, he becomes more curious about the secret meetings Sir William has with his friends, where they joke about death and make risky bets about how long they'll live. The first part of the story hints at deeper topics like wanting more, doing what's right, and how people act around each other when life and death are seen as a game.
