"The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven, Volume II" by Alexander Wheelock Thayer is a historical biography that explores the life of Ludwig van Beethoven in the early 1800s; the story starts in Vienna in 1803, and looks at the artistic world of the time, as well as Beethoven's work at the Theater-an-der-Wien, and his first oratorio, "Christus am Ölberg" which shows the difficulties of the opera world and Beethoven's partnerships, most significantly with the violinist Bridgetower on the "Kreutzer" Sonata, and focuses also on his growing fame beside the personal struggles caused by his growing deafness and his associations with other artists.

About the Author

Alexander Wheelock Thayer was an American librarian and journalist who became the author of the first scholarly biography of Ludwig van Beethoven. After many updates, it was still regarded as a standard work of reference by the composer.
