Summary

"The Deliverance: A Romance of the Virginia Tobacco Fields" by Ellen Glasgow is a story set in the South after the Civil War. It shows how people's identities and society itself change. The main character, Christopher Blake, is set on his family's land, trying to make a living while dealing with a complicated past and community. We see connections and problems with other people who live nearby, like Bill Fletcher, who used to oversee the land. New characters, like Carraway the lawyer, and family arguments show there will be conflict, wanting more, and a look at the heavy history that will shape the story.

About the Author

Ellen Anderson Gholson Glasgow was an American novelist who won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1942 for her novel In This Our Life. She published 20 novels, as well as short stories, to critical acclaim. A lifelong Virginian, Glasgow portrayed the changing world of the contemporary South in a realistic manner, differing from the idealistic escapism that characterized Southern literature after Reconstruction.
