Summary

"The Criminal" by Havelock Ellis is a document that navigates the landscape of criminal anthropology, focusing on the types of criminals and their links to individual situations and the society they live in. It's a look at the nature of criminal actions, physical looks, and the right and wrong connected to those who commit crimes, which allows understanding into how society views and groups crime. The writer introduces different kinds of criminals, such as political criminals, who are created by harsh governments. This is very different from criminals who act from personal feelings and the insane, who are mentally ill. The author uses examples of criminals, like the shocking story of a boy who commits violence for no reason and a girl lacking any remorse after a murder to show the need to understand all parts of criminals.
