Summary

"Tales and Novels of J. de La Fontaine — Complete" by Jean de La Fontaine is a compilation of funny and thought-provoking stories from the 1600s that uses wit to look at the silliness of people and customs of the time. The collection opens by talking about the author's life and the things that shaped his writing, before getting into La Fontaine's own thoughts about the tales, and what people might say about them. The first story, "Joconde," tells of a prince who thinks he’s super good-looking and makes a bet about it, which kicks off a bunch of surprising love situations. The tone is playful, and the stories touch on themes like vanity, love, and lies, encouraging readers to jump into La Fontaine's world.

About the Author

Jean de La Fontaine was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, as well as in French regional languages.
