Summary

"Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions; Together with Death's Duel" by John Donne is a series of thoughtful writings created in the 1600s that considers what it means to be human, exploring sickness, the end of life, and spirituality. It reveals the author's strong connection to both his mind and his beliefs as he deals with thoughts of his own death and the power of God. Acting as both a private thought journal and a shared expression of belief, the work stresses the link between physical pain and spiritual awareness. Early in the book, the author openly discusses his feelings about his sudden shift from being healthy to being sick, awakening feelings of fear and sadness about life. Reflecting on how easily humans can be hurt, he considers the unexpected arrival of illness and the upset it causes in both the body and spirit. Through sincere prayers and philosophical questions, the author exposes his difficulty in aligning his beliefs with the difficult truths of life, seeking comfort in God during his troubles. The start creates the mood for a deep view into faith and the human experience, getting readers ready for the deeper thoughts that come later in the book.
