Summary

"The Symposium" by Xenophon is a philosophical discussion that unfolds at a celebratory dinner hosted by Callias. Notable figures, including Socrates, gather to honor the young sportsman Autolycus, and the atmosphere soon fills with playful banter and intellectual sparring. The conversation turns to major philosophical themes, centered on love, beauty, and virtue, and with the arrival of a jester named Philippus, the dinner guests begin to express their personal understanding of these abstract concepts. Socrates encourages exploration and challenges assumptions, sparking a debate between personal values and societal expectations. Readers who are interested in classical thought and the complexity of human relationships may enjoy "The Symposium's" deep philosophical dive.

About the Author

Xenophon of Athens was a Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian. At the age of 30, he was elected as one of the leaders of the retreating Greek mercenaries, the Ten Thousand, who had been part of Cyrus's attempt to seize control of the Achaemenid Empire. As the military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge wrote, "the centuries since have devised nothing to surpass the genius of this warrior". Xenophon established precedents for many logistical operations and was among the first to describe strategic flanking maneuvers and feints in combat.
