"The Life and Times of Alfred the Great" by Charles Plummer is a historical exploration that untangles the real story of King Alfred, a leader who stood strong against Viking invasions and pushed for learning and organized government. The book looks closely at what people have gotten wrong about Alfred, using old writings to paint a clearer picture of his battles, his rule, and how he changed England. It begins by pointing out the problems with past Alfred stories and shows how tough it is to piece together history from what's left behind, setting the scene for a journey into the life of a truly important king.
