Summary

"The Querist" by George Berkeley is a collection of questions designed to make people think deeply during the 1700's. It looks at how societies become wealthy and what a government's role should be. The book asks tough questions about why some people are poor even when there seems to be enough food for everyone. It pushes readers to think about what real wealth is, how important hard work is, and whether things like fancy spending actually help a country. Through these questions, the author sparks a philosophical conversation about money, work, and how a country can create a better life for all its people.

About the Author

George Berkeley – known as Bishop Berkeley – was an Anglo-Irish philosopher whose primary achievement was the advancement of a theory he called "immaterialism". This theory denies the existence of material substance and instead contends that familiar objects like tables and chairs are ideas perceived by the mind and, as a result, cannot exist without being perceived. Berkeley is also known for his critique of abstraction, an important premise in his argument for immaterialism.
