"The Adventures of Captain Mago; or, A Phoenician Expedition, B.C. 1000" by David-Léon Cahun is a historical fiction story about Captain Mago, a skilled sailor from the city of Tyre, who sets sail on a big trip to Tarshish. King Hiram gives Mago this important job to find silver and valuable things for building a temple in Jerusalem for King David. As Mago gets ready, he meets with his friends Hanno the scribe and Himilco the pilot, and we learn about their lives and the world of ancient Phoenicia. Before they leave they go to the temple of Ashtoreth, and then they get their crew together and start their adventure at sea. The beginning of the story shows how the characters feel about each other, especially the rivalry from another sailor named Bodmilcar, who is jealous of Hanno. The stage is set for Captain Mago's journey to be filled with excitement, exploring the relationships and ambitions of these old-time sailors.
