"Back from hell"

"Back from Hell" by Samuel Cranston Benson is a true story from the early 1900s, telling of the author’s change from a peaceful minister to someone deeply involved in World War I, working as an ambulance driver in France for the American Ambulance Service; the story looks at what it means to do what's right, what people give up in war, and the terrible truth about war as he changes his beliefs when he sees people suffering; at first, he wants to help others and bring peace when he arrives by ship to France, but he's not sure what to expect, alone and dealing with confusing rules, he meets other soldiers and regular people, thinks a lot about how violent war is, and realizes how different the war is from what he imagined.
