John Dough and the Cherub

"John Dough and the Cherub" by L. Frank Baum is a fanciful story set in the early 1900s. The story centers around John Dough, a gingerbread man who comes to life after a magical elixir is mistakenly used during his baking, and Chick, the Incubator Baby that becomes his unlikely protector. The story starts when Madame Leontine Grogrande gains possession of two magical flasks containing the key to life. When the magical elixir she uses to cure her rheumatism brings a gingerbread man to life, John Dough leaves Madame Leontine Grogrande and soon learns that he is in danger of being eaten. Chick bravely promises to save John Dough and embarks on the adventure, facing challenges of identity, friendship, and trying to find belonging on the bizarre Isle of Phreex.
