Summary

"The Little Violinist" by Thomas Bailey Aldrich is a touching story from the late 1800s that explores both the sweetness of being a kid and the tough times faced by extremely talented young performers. The story centers around James Speaight, a very young fiddle player who amazes people with his skill, even though all he really wants is to have fun like other kids. The book shows how different his life is from two other boys, Charley and Talbot, who don't have as many worries. You start to see that James is carrying a lot of heavy expectations and responsibilities for someone so small. Sadly, after a show where he seems really worn out, James gets sick and doesn't recover, passing away after saying a heartfelt prayer. The author compares kids who get to grow up carefree with those who are pushed into the spotlight, making you think about what that kind of life does to someone so young.
