Summary

"Jack in the Rockies: A Boy's Adventures with a Pack Train" by George Bird Grinnell is an early 20th-century adventure story about a young boy's journey through the Rocky Mountains with his mentor. The tale begins with Jack Danvers traveling on a steamboat with Hugh Johnson towards Fort Benton, remembering his previous interactions with the Piegan tribe, and anticipating a return to the wilderness he loves. As they travel, Jack reflects on the dangers faced by Native Americans due to diseases brought by Europeans. Onboard the steamboat, the young boy's interactions with other individuals foreshadow the rugged life and thrilling encounters that await him and Hugh and their interactions with the land, animals, and Indigenous people emphasize the beauty and harsh realities of life on the American frontier.
