Summary

"The Ancien Régime" by Charles Kingsley is a critical look at France before its revolution, especially at how its strict social classes caused big problems. The book compares France with Britain, saying Britain was more stable because it didn't have the same rigid class system. The story starts with the author talking about rules he had to follow while giving lectures, especially about religion and politics. Kingsley points out that British laws helped poor people without causing the same kind of suffering seen in France, which he thinks is important for keeping a country calm. He warns that when the upper class isn't doing its job, too much power can end up in the hands of a few, and if there isn't a strong middle class, a revolution like the one in France could happen. The story shows that not caring for the common people and having too much government control were major reasons why the French Revolution started.

About the Author

Charles Kingsley was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives, which failed, but encouraged later working reforms.
