Summary

"The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe is an enthralling tale of a young man named Robinson Crusoe, who against his father's advice, chases his dream of sailing the open seas, only to be shipwrecked and stranded alone on an uninhabited island. The narrative begins by introducing Crusoe's disobedient spirit and the clash between his desires and his family's expectations. Ignoring his father's wisdom, he sets sail, immediately facing a storm that endangers his life. These early experiences hint at the struggles to come and set the scene for Crusoe's evolution into a resourceful survivor, emphasizing themes of adventure, self-reliance, and the strength of the human spirit amid hardship.

About the Author

Daniel Defoe was an English novelist, journalist, merchant, pamphleteer and spy. He is most famous for his novel Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, which is claimed to be second only to the Bible in its number of translations. He has been seen as one of the earliest proponents of the English novel, and helped to popularise the form in Britain with others such as Aphra Behn and Samuel Richardson. Defoe wrote many political tracts, was often in trouble with the authorities, and spent a period in prison. Intellectuals and political leaders paid attention to his fresh ideas and sometimes consulted him.
