Summary

"Talleyrand: A Biographical Study" by Joseph McCabe is a historical exploration of the life of Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-PĂ©rigord, a captivating French diplomat who maneuvered through the chaotic political world of France during the late 1700s and early 1800s. The book seeks to understand the complicated character and career of Talleyrand, which included important moments like the French Revolution and the growth of Napoleon, while exposing the personal and political details that formed his lasting impact. The study begins with Talleyrand's early life, showing how an accident during his childhood led him to a career in the Church even though he wasn't interested. The story examines Talleyrand's high-class upbringing in an upper-class family, his difficulties with being separated from his family, and the poor quality of education at the time. As he becomes a teenager, we witness the early formation of his personality, marked by a keen mind and a skill for diplomacy, as he grew more unhappy with the Church and the career path that was chosen for him. This prepares us to learn how these childhood events and observations turned Talleyrand into one of the most interesting political people of his era.

About the Author

Joseph Martin McCabe was an English writer and speaker on freethought, after having been a Roman Catholic priest earlier in his life. He was "one of the great mouthpieces of freethought in England". Becoming a critic of the Catholic Church, McCabe joined groups such as the Rationalist Association and the National Secular Society. He criticised Christianity from a rationalist perspective, but also was involved in the South Place Ethical Society which grew out of dissenting Protestantism and was a precursor of modern secular humanism.
