Summary

"Preston Fight; or, The Insurrection of 1715" by William Harrison Ainsworth is a historical fiction novel set in the early 18th century, painting a picture of the Jacobite rising of 1715 through the lives of key historical figures like the Earl of Derwentwater. Opening at Dilston Castle, the story introduces the young, noble Earl as he is about to meet with the Chevalier de Saint George, igniting themes of devotion, courage, and the severe implications of political unrest. The book follows the rising conflict, focusing on devotion and the costs that occur from political fights, all within richly detailed English history. The arrival of the disguised royal causes turmoil, setting the stage for a story that weaves romance and political plans, with characters like Lady Anna Webb playing central roles in a coming rebellion.

About the Author

William Harrison Ainsworth was an English historical novelist born at King Street in Manchester. He trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession held no attraction for him. While completing his legal studies in London he met the publisher John Ebers, at that time manager of the King's Theatre, Haymarket. Ebers introduced Ainsworth to literary and dramatic circles, and to his daughter, who became Ainsworth's wife.
