Summary

"Pages from an Old Volume of Life; A Collection of Essays, 1857-1881" by Oliver Wendell Holmes is a compilation of essays that reflects on life during the American Civil War era. The author shares his thoughts and feelings about the events of the time, the state of society, and the realities of war. He looks at how the war deeply impacted people's minds and actions, both on the battlefield and at home. Starting with an essay comparing basic needs like food and news to ancient Roman customs, Holmes shows how the war changed what people cared about and how they thought. His essays give a glimpse into a society struggling with strong emotions during a difficult time, blending personal stories with deep insights about humanity.
