Summary

"The Water of the Wondrous Isles" by William Morris is a fantasy novel that starts with a girl named Birdalone, snatched away by a witch to live beside a secluded lake hidden deep within a forest. As Birdalone gets older, she realizes she's a prisoner and starts dreaming of escaping, finding strength in nature and guidance from a friendly spirit. The book kicks off by showing a walled town near a spooky forest filled with scary stories. A strange witch shows up at the market, catching the eye of a poor mother by offering gold and showing lots of interest in her little girl, who the witch later takes in. This sets off Birdalone's journey of growing up trapped, wanting to break free, and trying to figure out who she is as she deals with her complicated relationship with the witch and the tempting call of adventure in the surrounding woods.
