Summary

"An Open-Eyed Conspiracy; An Idyl of Saratoga" by William Dean Howells is a story set in Saratoga Springs during the late 1800s, focusing on Basil March as he watches the other people on vacation with him. He is very interested in a young woman, Julia Gage, who appears to be sad and not enjoying the fancy parties and social events. The book looks at things like social classes, what people expect from love, and how hard it can be to find real relationships when everyone is pretending to be happy. When the story begins, Basil is in Congress Park, watching how everyone acts with each other. After watching a mother with her son, Basil starts thinking about how hard life can be for children. He then sees Julia, who is very beautiful. As Basil watches her with the people he thinks are taking care of her, he realizes that she is not happy with her summer vacation. This makes Basil want to get to know Julia and figure out all the complicated social rules of Saratoga.
