Summary

** "The Ramrodders: A Novel" by Holman Day is a story about an aging small-town ruler named Thelismer Thornton, or "Duke of Fort Canibas," who suddenly deals with an uprising against his iron grip as reform ideas take hold. The story, set in the imaginary town of Fort Canibas, looks into topics like power, allegiance, and the conflict between generations over what's right in politics. The novel kicks off with the Duke feeling secure as they head toward a caucus, even as the village simmers with discontent. Word comes to him about a political scheme led by Ivus Niles, a reformer, but he doesn't take the reformers seriously at first. As the town starts doubting his authority, the Duke realizes how strong the opposition is. The Duke's initial lack regard for the villagers turns into a feeling of treachery, exposing the flaws in his control. The troubled connection between the Duke, his devoted political pals, and the younger folks, especially his grandson, suggests a deeper battle involving family and beliefs as events move forward. **
