The Argosy, Vol. 51, No. 5, May, 1891

"The Argosy, Vol. 51, No. 5, May, 1891" by Various is a collection of late 19th-century tales exploring the intricacies of human life through mystery, love, and self-discovery. The story begins with Janet Hope, a woman starting her new job at Deepley Walls after being offered a position by Lady Chillington. Janet balances her desire for freedom with her responsibilities; this contrast comes into sharp focus when she agrees to visit the eerie "Black Room". Inside, she finds a coffin, a bizarre request left by Lady Chillington’s dead husband. The narrative suggests more intrigue involving a diamond and the departed Captain Chillington, combining Janet's path with the estate's dark past and its strange inhabitants—all wrapped in suspense.
