"Essays on Life, Art and Science" by Samuel Butler is a collection of writings that display the author's wide range of talents and humor as he examines topics from personal experiences to opinions on society, art, and scientific ideas. The writings offer insights into Butler's thinking, individual stories, and analysis of human actions and the world. The collection starts by presenting Butler's views on life and literature, showing his modest humor and original way of looking at writing. He starts with a story about looking for a writing desk in the British Museum, exposing his thoughtful personality and the challenges he deals with as a writer. This beginning prepares readers for the rest of the essays, where Butler thinks about different literary characters, sharing complicated thoughts in an easy-to-understand way while linking himself, his writing, and the importance of famous writers throughout time, resulting in an engaging search for art, philosophy, and the complicated details of life that asks readers to consider their lives and the world they live in.

About the Author

Samuel Butler was an English novelist and critic, best known for the satirical utopian novel Erewhon (1872) and the semi-autobiographical novel The Way of All Flesh. Both novels have remained in print since their initial publication. In other studies he examined Christian orthodoxy, evolutionary thought, and Italian art, and made prose translations of the Iliad and Odyssey that are still consulted.
