Summary

"Poetical Works of Robert Bridges, Volume 1" by Robert Bridges is a compilation of poems from the late 1800s that highlights his interest in love, sacrifice, and the relationships between gods and humans. The collection starts with "Prometheus the Firegiver," which tells the story of Prometheus' descent from Olympus to give fire to humanity against Zeus’s orders. The poem shows the conflict between Prometheus and Zeus, as well as Prometheus' meeting with Inachus, the king of Argos. Prometheus explains how important fire is for changing people's lives and shows his dislike for Zeus’s control. This beginning suggests the larger themes of power and human ambition that are present in Bridges' collection of poems as Prometheus prepares to give humanity the divine flame.
