"The Mystery of Choice" by Robert W. Chambers is a set of short stories that focus on the interplay of affection, decisions, and otherworldly events at the close of the 1800's. The stories follow characters as they face tough decisions that end up with different implications to their lives, usually happening where what is real and an obscure happening mix. The collection starts by telling about "The Purple Emperor," which introduces us to Monsieur Darrel who is a bug expert, meeting a well known butterfly expert. Darrel and the Purple Emperor talk about bugs and fishing, we hear of the Purple Emperor's tough treatment to his niece, Lys, whom Darrel becomes fond of. This hard relationship and the jealousies among bug experts show harder parts that follow as jealous emotions and family fights all get tangled together. At the start, we can see Darrel's worries for Lys grow as the lives of everyone connect and unusual things happen around them.
