Summary

"Books and Persons; Being Comments on a Past Epoch, 1908-1911" by Arnold Bennett is a compilation of early 20th-century essays that capture the author's reflections on literature, writers, and the artistic climate of his time. Drawn from articles Bennett wrote for a weekly paper, the book looks at standards for literature, the roles of authors and publishers, and concepts of beauty in writing. The book starts by showcasing Bennett's critical style, using discussions of writer Wilfred Whitten to frame his own views on prose and criticism. Bennett makes clear his take on the literary world, noting difficulties faced by dedicated authors in an era sometimes too focused on less meaningful work; he highlights sincerity in prose. This collection provides a look into Bennett's literary opinions and social commentary in a bygone era.
