Summary

"Overruled" by Bernard Shaw is a funny play set in the early 1900s that looks at marriage, cheating, and what society thinks about love. The story happens at a hotel by the sea, where two married couples, Gregory and Mrs. Lunn, and Sibthorpe and Mrs. Juno, talk about tricky situations between themselves, such as love, trust, and their tricky challenges. The characters face attraction for others while also feeling the stress of morals, causing a few misunderstandings that show problems in their marriages. The play shows the characters' internal struggles as they try to balance their feelings with what society expects of them. The play asks questions about what love and loyalty really mean, showing how easily social rules can clash with what people truly want in a humorous way.

About the Author

George Bernard Shaw, known at his insistence as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic, polemicist and political activist. His influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1913) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
