Summary

"The Last of the Legions and Other Tales of Long Ago" by Arthur Conan Doyle is a compilation of historical fiction pieces that transports readers to Roman Britain during a period of immense upheaval. As the mighty Roman legions receive the fateful command to abandon the British Isles, the narrative highlights the challenges faced by Pontus, the Roman viceroy, and Licinius Crassus, the military leader, as they contemplate the inevitable power vacuum and the dire consequences for the now-unprotected Britons. Faced with the pleas of British chieftains Celticus, Caradoc, and Regnus, who foresee chaos and vulnerability, the story vividly illustrates the complex interactions and deep-seated tensions that arise as Britain stands on the precipice of a significant historical shift, where old alliances crumble and new conflicts emerge. This book captures a time of uncertainty and struggle.
