"The Rover Boys on Snowshoe Island; or, The Old Lumberman's Treasure Box" by Arthur M. Winfield is a children's adventure story about Jack, Andy, Randy, and their cousin Fred, known as the Rover Boys, who are students at Colby Hall and find excitement even in their studies. The story starts with a winter ice-skating race at Clearwater Lake where the boys compete and try to impress some girls. Things get dangerous when the ice starts breaking, and the boys quickly work to rescue the girls, including Ruth Stevenson. This event leads them to Ruth's Uncle Barney Stevenson, a lumberman living on Snowshoe Island, who seems bitter but may be a key part of a mystery.
