"The Mysterious Basket; or, The Foundling. The story starts with Hicup, a grumpy innkeeper, upset about his slow business while a rival inn thrives, until a mysterious woman asks him for help. The skeptical landlord and his kind wife then care for the foundlings, and one of them, Christlieb, is adopted. Through these new relationships, the story looks at growing up and finding where you belong, setting the stage for the obstacles and successes that await Christlieb.
